With profound sadness, family, friends, and loved ones mourn the tragic passing of Doug Clifton and Kathy Velez Katz, who lost their lives in a fatal motorcycle accident on Monday afternoon, September 15, 2025.
Doug and Kathy, beloved partners and longtime fixtures in the Deadhead scene, were riding together on their BMW motorcycle along State Route 50 near mile marker 136 in Utah when a box truck crossed into their lane, resulting in a devastating head-on collision. They were on a heartfelt journey from the Bay Area to Colorado Springs, where they planned to attend the Firefighters’ Memorial.
Both Doug and Kathy will be remembered not only for their deep love of music and the community it created but also for their vibrant spirits, kindness, and the joy they shared with everyone who knew them. Their lives were defined by connection, love, and a shared passion for adventure.
They leave behind grieving family members, countless friends, and a community forever touched by their presence.
