TAMPA, Fla. — Students and staff at the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus were evacuated from the library Friday following reports of shots fired inside the building.

One student described the sudden evacuation, saying that police rushed into the library with weapons drawn and moved quickly upstairs. “All of the sudden the police showed up with guns out and headed up the stairs. There are police surrounding the library, and even a helicopter overhead,” the student shared.

Campus police immediately secured the area, surrounding the library with squad cars and directing people away from the building. Those inside the student commons on the first floor were also evacuated safely.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any shots were fired or if there are injuries. At this time, no official statement has been released about the cause of the incident or whether a suspect has been detained.

The scene remains active, and law enforcement is asking the public to avoid the area.
