A student at Westwood Regional Middle School tragically died by suicide on Friday, July 25, according to school officials and a Meal Train page created in the family’s honor.
While the identity of the student has not been publicly released, the heartbreaking news has sent shockwaves through the school community. In the wake of the tragedy, neighbors, friends, and members of the broader Westwood community have stepped up to support the grieving family.
A Meal Train page was launched to provide meals and ease the family’s daily burdens during this difficult time. As of Saturday afternoon, more than $5,900 had been raised, and dozens of community members have signed up to deliver meals. Drop-off hours are listed between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
School officials have expressed their condolences and confirmed that grief counselors and mental health resources will be available for students and staff starting Monday.
“This is a devastating loss for our entire school community,” a district spokesperson said. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the student’s family and loved ones. Our focus right now is on supporting our students, staff, and the grieving family.”
Mental health professionals emphasize the importance of checking in with young people and ensuring open lines of communication. Resources such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline are available 24/7 at 988.
The Westwood community continues to come together in mourning, determined to support one another and to honor the memory of a life lost too soon.
