Authorities responded to the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside Friday afternoon following unconfirmed reports of an active shooter, prompting a large police presence and precautionary lockdowns within parts of the complex.

Law enforcement from multiple agencies, including Holyoke Police and Massachusetts State Police, were observed securing the perimeter of the mall and entering the building around 2:45 p.m. Witnesses on social media described officers with rifles and tactical gear moving through entrances and conducting searches inside.

As of this publication, no official confirmation has been provided regarding shots fired, injuries, or the presence of an armed suspect. Police have not yet issued a formal statement.

“We are aware of the reports and are investigating,” said one officer on the scene who declined to provide further details. Several stores reportedly initiated shelter-in-place protocols, and some shoppers were temporarily prevented from exiting the mall.

Emergency dispatch logs referenced a “disturbance” at the mall but did not immediately confirm the nature of the incident. The mall remains partially accessible, but foot traffic has been significantly reduced.

This event comes more than two years after a fatal shooting in January 2023 at the same mall, which was determined to be an isolated incident involving a personal dispute. That case resulted in one death and led to murder charges against a Springfield man.

Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area while the investigation is ongoing. Residents and media are advised to await official updates from the Holyoke Police Department and Massachusetts State Police.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
