It is with profound heartbreak that we announce the tragic passing of Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a bright, compassionate, and driven 21-year-old who was taken far too soon. Eric died on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, after being shot in Washington, D.C., near the intersection of 7th and M Street, in what authorities have described as a targeted shooting. Eric was not the intended target — he was an innocent bystander caught in a senseless act of violence.
A native of Granby, Massachusetts, Eric was spending the summer in Washington, D.C., as an intern for Representative Ron Estes (R-KS). He had only recently begun his internship in June, but had already made a strong impression with his diligence, insight, and warm spirit.
Eric was a rising senior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, majoring in finance with a minor in political science. He had aspirations of making a difference in the world — combining his passion for public service with a sharp analytical mind and a deep sense of integrity.
Those who knew Eric remember his kindness, humility, and fierce dedication to everything he pursued. He was the type of person who lifted others up, who approached each day with quiet determination and a generous heart. His loss is deeply felt by his family, friends, peers, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In the wake of this tragedy, Eric’s family asks for privacy as they grieve, and they invite those who knew and loved him to honor his memory by living with the same purpose, empathy, and light that he brought into the world.
Funeral arrangements will be shared in the coming days.
Rest in peace, Eric. You had so much ahead of you, and you will never be forgotten.
