A tragic incident unfolded on Main Street in Fairport Friday afternoon, where a man jumped in front of a train. Fairport Police Chief Matthew Barnes confirmed the fatality and said officers responded to the scene shortly after 3 p.m. to begin an investigation.
“This isn’t the first time at this location,” Chief Barnes said solemnly at the scene. “You know, any time you come to something like this it’s sad. It’s a human being you’re dealing with. That human being, for whatever reason, decided to take these actions… one life affects however many. It’s terrible.”
The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family. Police have not indicated whether foul play is suspected, but the incident is being carefully reviewed.
Chief Barnes noted that a similar tragedy occurred at this same location about a year and a half ago, underscoring a concerning history at this stretch of track.
Officials urge caution around railways and remind the public of the profound impact such incidents have on families, first responders, and the community as a whole. The investigation is ongoing.
