It is with profound sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of a 12-year-old girl, a young student of Asheville Academy in North Carolina. Her life was tragically cut short following a distressing incident that remains under active investigation.

Her passing has sent waves of grief through the community, prompting responses and action from state and local authorities. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), in collaboration with the Buncombe County Department of Social Services and the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, is working diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding this devastating loss.

In a statement, an NCDHHS spokesperson expressed heartfelt condolences, saying:

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families, loved ones, and communities impacted by the loss of these young lives. NCDHHS is committed to conducting a thorough investigation with our county partners… to ensure the health and well-being of children and youth at Asheville Academy.”

Despite ongoing concerns, including documented violations cited by NCDHHS on May 27 that described conditions at the facility as “detrimental to the health and safety of the clients,” no order has been issued to remove the children currently enrolled. As of May 30, students continue to remain at the facility.

This young girl’s passing is a painful reminder of the vulnerability of those in our care and the critical importance of safeguarding their well-being. Her memory will be held dearly by all who knew and loved her, even in her brief time on earth. She brought light, innocence, and joy to the world around her, and her loss is immeasurable.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family at a later time. The community continues to hold the grieving family in its thoughts and prayers during this time of unimaginable sorrow.
