Several schools in Coconut Grove were briefly placed on lockdown Wednesday morning following a false report of an active shooter, which authorities now believe was a SWATting incident.
Just before 10:50 a.m., Miami police received a 911 call claiming there was a shooting in progress at 3575 Main Highway. Officers responded immediately, but after a thorough investigation, determined the call to be unfounded.
As a safety precaution, nearby campuses — including Ransom Everglades Middle and High Schools and Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart — were placed on lockdown while police secured the area.
The lockdowns were lifted once authorities confirmed there was no real threat. No injuries were reported.
Investigators are now working to trace the source of the false report. Police emphasized that SWATting — the act of making a hoax emergency call to prompt a heavy law enforcement response — is a serious crime that carries legal consequences.
“False reports like this waste valuable resources and create unnecessary panic,” said a Miami Police Department spokesperson. “Thankfully, everyone is safe.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact local authorities.
