At least 12 people were injured, some critically, in a knife attack at Hamburg’s main train station on Friday, authorities confirmed. The incident, which occurred in the early afternoon, sent shockwaves through the bustling transport hub and prompted a swift response from emergency services.
According to a statement from the Hamburg police, the suspect was quickly apprehended at the scene. “According to initial information, a person injured several people with a knife at the main train station,” the police said in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “The suspect was apprehended by the responding forces.”
Local newspaper Bild reported that several of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries. Paramedics and emergency teams were dispatched immediately to provide urgent care, while parts of the station were temporarily sealed off.
Authorities have not yet released details about the suspect’s identity or motive. Police say an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The attack has reignited concerns about public safety in high-traffic transportation areas. Security at train stations across Germany has been heightened as a precaution.
Government officials expressed solidarity with the victims. “Our thoughts are with those injured and their families. We thank the first responders for their courage and swift action,” said a spokesperson for the Hamburg city government.
