With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Michael Barnes, 67, of Valparaiso, Indiana, whose life was tragically lost in a fishing accident on Lake Michigan. Michael’s body was recovered near shore Monday afternoon following a search by Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officers.

Michael was enjoying a day of fishing near Burns Waterway when he entered the water to retrieve a boat that had drifted from the beach. He went underwater approximately 60 yards from shore and did not resurface. Despite valiant efforts, he was recovered around 1:40 p.m., nearly two hours after the incident was first reported.

A longtime resident of Valparaiso, Michael was known for his quiet strength, love of nature, and deep appreciation for the outdoors. An avid fisherman, he found peace along the lakeshore and joy in the simple act of casting a line. His calm demeanor, warm heart, and gentle spirit made him a beloved figure among family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Michael is survived by his loving family, including children, grandchildren, and many dear friends. His legacy of kindness, patience, and love of nature will live on in the memories he leaves behind.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days. The family extends its gratitude to the Indiana DNR and first responders for their dedicated efforts, and asks for privacy as they grieve the loss of a cherished father, grandfather, and friend.

Michael will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
