It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of woolgrower Sonya Irwin, a prominent woolgrower and cherished member of the Riverland community. Mrs. Irwin, aged 62, tragically lost her life in a dam accident at Balah Station, the family’s 65,000-hectare property located 36 km from Morgan, South Australia.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, April 9, 2025, Mrs. Irwin was performing routine farm duties when the accident occurred. Her husband, James Irwin, became concerned after several unsuccessful attempts to reach her by phone. A neighbor discovered her vehicle submerged in the dam, and emergency services were called to the scene. Mrs. Irwin’s body was recovered that evening, and authorities reported no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.
Mrs. Irwin co-managed Balah Station with her husband for four decades, demonstrating exceptional leadership and business acumen. Known affectionately as the station’s “backbone,” she was deeply passionate about the land and played a pivotal role in its operations. Her husband described her as “a great pastoralist, great stockwoman, clever businesswoman,” and noted that she “ran everything really,” from mustering to financial matters.
Beyond her professional life, Mrs. Irwin was an active and vibrant community member. She excelled in sports, particularly golf and waterskiing, and was a valued member of the Burra Golf Club. Her competitive spirit and determination were evident in her achievements, including a standout performance in the Barossa Valley Open in 2023.
A memorial service to honor Mrs. Irwin’s life and legacy will be announced in the coming days.
Mrs. Irwin’s unwavering dedication to her family, her work, and her community will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, passion, and resilience that will continue to inspire those she touched.
