On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at approximately 10:02 AM, the Maine State Police and Winthrop Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a distressing incident at a residence on Giles Road in Readfield. Upon arrival, responding officers discovered a deceased adult female outside the home. The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Margaux Whittemore of Belfast.
Inside the residence, officers found 67-year-old Dorothy Whittemore, the homeowner, suffering from injuries. She was immediately transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where she was listed in critical condition at the time. Thankfully, her condition has since been upgraded, and she remains under medical care.
The suspect, 34-year-old Samuel Whittemore, also of Belfast, fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by a Trooper a short distance away. He was initially transported to Maine General Hospital in Augusta for an evaluation before being taken to the Kennebec County Jail. Samuel Whittemore has since been charged with Murder in connection to his wife’s death.
Margaux and Samuel Whittemore were married and had been visiting Samuel’s parents’ home in Readfield at the time of the tragic incident. Dorothy Whittemore, Samuel’s mother, was the only other person inside the house during the event. Samuel’s father was not at the residence at the time but arrived shortly after the incident occurred.
The deceased has been transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy. The autopsy, performed on Thursday morning, February 20, 2025, confirmed that the manner of death has been ruled a homicide.
The Maine State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. Samuel Whittemore remains in custody as the investigation progresses.
