lkhart, IN – Authorities continue to investigate the fatal shooting at Martin’s Supermarket in Elkhart. The tragic incident occurred Monday evening when 54-year-old Juan M. Sanchez entered the store and opened fire, killing 49-year-old Benjamin S. Jeffrey, a customer, and 19-year-old Annasue Rocha, an employee of the store.

Sanchez, who had moved to Elkhart from Illinois within the past year, was confronted by two Elkhart police officers after leaving the store. Authorities said Sanchez opened fire on the officers, who responded by fatally shooting him.
The two officers were injured in the exchange, with one remaining in stable condition while the other has been released from the hospital.
While authorities have yet to provide a motive for the shooting, the investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the attack. The community continues to mourn the loss of Jeffrey and Rocha, as well as express concern for the safety and well-being of the injured officers.
