Plymouth stabbing – Claire Butler, a respected and dedicated nurse and educator, tragically passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2025, after an attack in West Hoe, Plymouth. She was 45 years old.
Claire was known for her compassionate nature and lifelong commitment to nursing and education. Born with a passion for helping others, she began her career as a cardiac care unit nurse at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, where she demonstrated extraordinary care and expertise. Over time, Claire’s dedication to nursing expanded into education, earning a series of teaching qualifications that would shape her future in academia.
As a senior cardiac research nurse and trial coordinator at the University of Leicester, Claire’s contributions to medical research and patient care were invaluable. She later moved to the University of Plymouth, where she continued her career as a lecturer in adult nursing. Her dedication to her students and the field of nursing was unwavering, and she quickly advanced to become deputy BSc (Hons) programme lead and ultimately Associate Head of School for Internationalisation.
Claire’s impact on her students and colleagues was profound, and her legacy in nursing education will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of working alongside her. Her colleagues describe her as a mentor, a leader, and a kind soul with an infectious passion for nursing and global healthcare education.
Claire is survived by her family, friends, and many colleagues who will miss her greatly. A private service will be held to honor her memory. The family asks for privacy during this difficult time and appreciates the outpouring of love and support from those whose lives she touched.
